Coimbatore to host global meet on saving Western Ghats in November

In a move to preserve and conserve the rich ecological ghats, a three-day international conference on the Ecological Festival of Western Ghats will be organised in Coimbatore from November 30, the Save Western Ghats Movement said in a press statement.

The global meet would focus on saving the ghats, a UNESCO Heritage Site, from degradation and destruction. The conference is expected to host set of groups, which consists of scientists, environmentalists, wildlife activists, photographers, students and farmers under single platform.

The delegates will brainstorm on saving the ghats from losing its sheen.

The meet would dwell into reports of Madhav Gadgil Commission and Kasthurirangan Commission on Western Ghats that forest cover in the ghats has reduced to 10 per cent from the stipulated 66 per cent, the release said.

Chief ministers of six states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat are expected to grace the event. The release also said that there was a plan to invite Union ministers concerned to take part in the conference on its concluding day.

The recent floods in Kerala and in parts of Karnataka had helped create awareness among the people from all walks of life on the need to protect and preserve the ghats, said the release.
