Jose Mourinho behind my England call-up, says Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has said that Jose Mourinho is behind his comeback to the England national team and the Red Devils’ boss was right to publicly criticise him to get the best out of his potential. Shaw has recently won Manchester United’s Player of the Month for August 2018.

The 23-year-old defender was called up to the England squad for matches against Switzerland and Spain following a bright start to the club season after spending 18 months out of the squad

Shaw has consistently struggled to earn a starting spot in Mourinho’s Manchester United XI mostly due to injuries and lack of form and the Portuguese manager had once said that he was asking to be substituted during the match because he was playing so badly

"I've matured. You could say I've gone from a kid to a man. I know what I need to do to push myself. I want to play for Manchester United, stay there and prove my worth to the team."

The former Southampton left-back has been impressive so far in the Premier League and was recently named Manchester United’s Player of the Month. Now when he looked back to Mourinho’s treatment of him, he said "I think he got frustrated with me because he knew I could do better. When I look back, maybe he was right.

Shaw bagged his debut goal for United on the opening day of the Premier League in the 2-1 victory over Leicester City and said he is desperate to prove his critics wrong.

"It was a tough few years but it made me stronger mentally. I wanted to prove to him I can do what he said I couldn't.

Luke Shaw further admitted that Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho wanted him to stay and fight for his place in the squad.

"I had a chat with the manager before the season and he said he wanted me to stay.

"I wanted to prove everyone wrong and get back to what I do best. I need games to get fully fit and motivated. I'm feeling back to my old self."

The Three Lions’ international praised fellow United and England team-mate Ashley Young for his World Cup performances and said he feels sorry for him for getting dropped from the England squad for the matches against Spain and Switzerland.

"During the World Cup, Ashley Young was really good and one of our key players. Of course, I feel sympathy for him but it's a chance for me.”

However, he feels the competition for the left-back squad is really high in the England set-up and coach Gareth Southgate will have a hard time picking the best from the lot.

"I'm sure it's hard for Gareth to pick. There are a few other left-backs in the league that are really top. I guess it's good for Gareth that he has hard choices like this."
