New Delhi:

The opposition BJP is leading in 53 seats in the 70-member Uttarakhand Assembly. As per the latest trends available for 70 seats, the BJP has taken the lead in 53, the ruling Congress is ahead in 14 and Independents in three, state election office said.

Ever since Uttarakhand was carved out of Uttar Pradesh 16 years ago, no party had won consecutive terms in the state.

Counting of votes begun in Uttarakhand at 8 AM amid tight security on Saturday. It was seen as a clash between Congress and BJP in the State. The exit polls have predicted victory for the BJP in Uttarakhand.

Extensive arrangements were made for counting of the Uttarakhand state polls where 637 candidates from 70 seats awaited the results with bated breath.

The assembly polls are being seen as a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity and his reforms agenda, particularly demonetisation.
