Nayagram (WB):

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said restoration of peace in Maoist-affected Jangalmahal was her government’s biggest achievement in the last four and half years which had been possible due to development works.

“I started working from Jangalmahal (as chief minister of the state)... Our (TMC) government has been able to restore peace in Jangalmahal. This was our challenge and commitment after we came to power,” Banerjee told a public rally here.

“Peace in Jangalmahal is the biggest achievement of the state government,” she said inaugurating a host of development projects at Jangalmahal.

The Jangalmahal area comprise the tribal inhabited forest areas in the districts of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.

Banerjee said under Trinamool Congress government Jangalmahal has seen a “huge surge” of development activities.  “The dark days of Amlasole are over. Various schemes have put smiles on the faces of the people of Jangalmahal.”

Amlasole village in West Midnapore district had hit the headlines in 2004 during the erstwhile Left Front rule for alleged starvation deaths.

Claiming that the LF government did little for the development of the people of Jangalmahal during its 34 years’ rule in the state, Banerjee said that she has tried to fulfill the expectations of its people in the last four-and-half years.

“I have worked towards the fulfillment of expectations of the people here ... I never thought that I will be able to complete this huge task of completing the bridge, which is the longest in the state till date,” she said inaugurating the Rs 170 crore Jungle Kanya bridge over Subarnarekha river at Bhasraghat in West Midnapore district.

The chief minister criticised the Centre for “discontinuing” with flow of funds to various projects and said despite the “total non-cooperation” by the Centre, her government has kept all projects operational in the people’s interest.

“The Centre has stopped providing funds for several programmes (like ICDS) but we have made it a point that they are operational ... I do not want them to be stopped,” she said.
