Former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma Passed Away On Friday Following A Heart Attack. He Was 68. Tributes Were Paid To Sangma In Parliament On Friday.

Former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma passed away on Friday following a heart attack. He was 68. Tributes were paid to Sangma in Lok Sabha on Friday after Speaker Sumitra Mahajan announced the newsof his death in the House. The Lok Sabha was adjourned till March 8 after paying tribute to Sangma.

Mahajan expressed deep grief over Sangma’s demise and said he knew how to run the House with a smile and “I learnt this from him.”

“A man of masses, Sangma strove relentlessly for the amelioration of the marginalised sections,” she said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of Sangma and said he was “a self-made leader whose contribution towards the development of the North East is monumental.  Saddened by his demise.”

Sangma’s tenure as Lok Sabha Speaker “is unforgettable. His down-to-earth personality and affable nature endeared him to many. Sangmaji was deeply influenced by Netaji Bose,” he said.

Born on September 1, 1947, Purno Agitok Sangma was Lok Sabha Speaker from 1996 to 1998. He was the Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990. 

A co-founder of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Sangma remained a member of the Lok Sabha for eight terms – 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th. 

He also founded National People's Party on January 6, 2013 with Book as its National symbol.
