Postage stamp ‘Pluto not yet explored’ in the year 1991, which is now travelling on a spacecraft also known as New Horizon is said to be the fastest rocket that was ever built. Apollo 11 took three days to reach moon. It has passed moon in nine hours new horizon has.
In 2006, a 29 cent stamp was placed on board the New Horizons spacecraft at Cape Canaveral, Florida, prior to launch on Jan.19, 2006, on its way beyond to Pluto. After travelling for nine and a half years the spacecraft that is travelling for more than three billion miles, now the stamp has set the world record of being the farthest traveled postage stamp.
On July 19, NASA and the U.S Postal Service at a ceremony at Postal Service Headquarters marked its achievement. Space fans have been asked to spread the news on social media by using the hashtag ##PlutoExplored
Guinness World Record official adjudicator Jimmy Coggins presented the certificate to Cochrane who is the U.S. Postal Service Chief marketing and Sales Officer and Executive Vice President
Jim Green, NASA’s director of Planetary Science said “The New Horizons mission to Pluto is not only writing space history, it’s setting a high bar for achievements beyond its many science discoveries,” adding “NASA joins the U.S. Postal Service in expressing our mutual appreciation for this special recognition”.
The dwarf planet was reached by the spacecraft on July 14, 2015. It was the first time that any spacecraft has reached there and has brought close-ups of the mysterious planet.
When New Horizon space craft flew beyond Pluto, the stamp was cancelled last July but later they planned to put the record straight.
This record will continue for another 1 billion miles, as NASA recently announced the New Horizons mission will journey beyond Pluto to visit a Kuiper Belt object known as 2014 MU69, considered as one the early building bricks of the solar system.
