Jind:

Challenging all social stigmas, a Haryana man not only married a gang rape victim but has enrolled her in law education so that she can seek justice and help others. Jitender Chhatar, a resident of Chhatar village of Jind, has now reached out Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar seeking his intervention in arrest of one of the accused who is still at large.

Chhatar is happily married to the survivor since December 4, 2015. Apart from providing her moral support, Chhatar has also got his wife enrolled in a law course. "She can join the judicial services or as a lawyer can help other rape survivors. We have already started a platform called, Youth Against Rapes," he said.

His wife said other rape survivors were not as fortunate and face many hardships besides the trauma of being violated. "Since the day we got engaged, except for discussion with lawyer or in court we don't talk about my case much. I and my family owe a lot to Jitender as part from fighting off the taboo, he is also facing the ire of the accused who try to frame him in false cases," she said.

She said she was sexually abuse and blackmailed by Neeraj, a resident of Jind and owner of a coaching centre, along with four others, including a woman. Her family members had approached Jitender's family with a marriage proposal. His family accepted. When she came to know about it, she approached Jitender to reveal the truth and tried to persuade him to marry elsewhere.

She asked me to marry someone else since it could affect my social life. However, my family and I did not change our decision," said Jitender while referring to the circumstances in which he had met her first.

He said thereafter he pursued his wife's case with police and they caught one woman red-handed who had come to get an instalment of extortion money from her in Panipat. Jitender said the case was shifted to Jind and rest of the accused were arrested.
