It is a famous quote that old habits die hard. American tennis great Serena Williams has a habit of rewriting record books in women’s tennis and she once again did so by winning her 308 Grand Slam match, a new Grand Slam record for any player in the Open Era.

Williams has gone one better than Swiss maestro Roger Federer’s 307 grand slam match wins in the Open Era. Williams reached this landmark by securing a straight set 6-2, 6-3 victory over Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan in her fourth round encounter. Williams has set up a mouth watering quarterfinal clash against a formidable opponent in Romanian Simona Halep who is seeded fifth in the tournament.

Williams is on the cusp of being labelled as the most successful female player in tennis history as she inches closer to a potential 23rd Grand Slam Singles title. Williams with 22 Grand Slam Singles titles is already tied with German legend Steffi Graf for the most Grand Slam Singles titles won by a female player in the Open Era.
