New Delhi:

Indian opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan is celebrating his 31st Birthday on Monday. Cricketers and fans across the country and the world have been greeting and pouring in their wishes to the Indian opening batsman on his B'day.

Dhawan's India and Delhi teammate Virender Sehwag who has created a mark of his own with his trademark tweets, tweeted that Dhawan does the groundbreaking ceremony in the dressing room and snake dance while batting for at least two hours every time he plays. The snake dance is a happy form of dance; done mostly while celebrating.

Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan has been one of the pillars of the Delhi top-order for almost a decade. Along with Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag, he has been one of the consistent run-getters for his state side in the domestic circuit.

The Delhi opener first hogged the limelight when he amassed 505 runs in the Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2004 for which he was named the player of the tournament.

Dhawan is an attacking opening batsman and generally likes to dominate the bowling by taking the attack to the opposition early on. Dhawan is good at playing the cut and is a superb driver of the ball. His favorite shots are the off-drive and the straight drive, and is quite strong off his pads too.He uses his feet well against the spinners.

ODI Career

Over the last couple of years, Dhawan's rise has been quite splendid. After Indian cricket was left high and dry post the highly successful opening pair of Sehwag- Gambhir bidding adieu to international cricket, Shikhar Dhawan answered India's call for a stable and dependable opener upfront.

Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have formed a successful opening combination for India in the ODI's and the pair has given India the dependability factor at top of the order.Sharma and Dhawan were one of the most consistent opening pairs in the ODI arena in 2012 and 2013.

Dhawan had a brilliant run in ODIs in 2013 as he emerged as the player of the tournament in the ICC Champions Trophy in June 2013. He scored 363 runs in just five games, including two centuries and a fifty. Shikhar scored heavily against the Australians and the West Indies at home to round of a brilliant year.

Test Career

Dhawan had a splendid domestic season with the bat in 2012, where he scored three centuries, made him the next opener in waiting for the national side and he replaced an out-of-form Gambhir in the squad for the Tests against the visiting Australians.

Dhawan started off his Test career in brilliant fashion by scoring the fastest century by a Test debutant off just 85 balls against the Australians in March 2013. He also broke the long-held record of highest score by an Indian Test debutant held by Gundappa Viswanath by slamming 187.

Dhawan had a forgettable Test series against England in 2014, with a best of 37 in six innings. Dhawan did not get any significant scores in the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He lost his place to young Lokesh Rahul, who scored a magnificent hundred in the final Test.
