New Delhi:

TIME Magazine has voted US President-elect Donald Trump as the Person of the Year for 2016. Donald Trump beat eminent global personalities like Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Hillary Clinton who were in the run for becoming the Person of the year.

Earlier Narendra Modi had won the online readers’ poll conducted by Time magazine for Person of the Year 2016, the second time he emerged winner of the reader’s choice poll.

The US president-elect’s selection was announced Wednesday morning on NBC’s “Today” show.

The president-elect teased a Wednesday morning interview on “Today,” scheduled for the exact same time the morning show was set to announce the magazine’s annual honor.

Donald Trump was ecstatic on being declared the winner and said - “It’s a great honor. It means a lot,” the president-elect said. “It’s a very important magazine and I’ve been lucky enough to be on the cover many times this year.”

Trump’s rival Hillary Clinton, who became the first woman to secure the nomination from a major party, but ultimately lost the election while winning the popular vote, came in second.

Hackers, like the ones who allegedly broke into the Democratic National Committee’s database this summer, took the No. 3 spot, although the group did not appear on a list of 11 Person of the Year finalists Time published Monday. Time has historically given the president-elect or the president the title each election year.

President Obama was named the Person of the Year after both of his elections in 2008 and 2012. George W. Bush got it in 2000 and 2004. Bill Clinton earned the honor in 1992, while he split it in 1998 with Ken Starr, the lawyer whose investigations set the stage for the president’s impeachment.
