New Delhi:

According to reports presented by Minister of State for Home Hansraj Gangaram Ahir in Parliament, the number of honour killings in India, have risen by almost 800 percent.

“As per information provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 28 cases and 251 cases were reported under murder (Section 302 IPC) and culpable homicide not amounting to murder (Section 304 IPC) with the motive of honour killings in the country during 2014 and 2015, respectively,” Minister of State for Home Hansraj Gangaram Ahir said in a written reply.

The surge could partly reflect more willingness by people to report such crimes, which many still consider just punishment for women and men who defy communal customs by marrying outside of their religion, clan, or caste.

As many as 279 honour killing cases were registered in different parts of the country during 2014 and 2015, Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

Replying to another question, he said according to NCRB, a total of 457 cases were reported during 2013, 2014 and 2015 under murder (Section 302 IPC) and Culpable Homicide not amounting to murder (Section 304 IPC) with the motives of witchcraft.
