The 94-year-old legendary singer Manna Dey also kwon as Prabodh Chandra De, one of Indian cinema's golden voices, died in a Bangalore hospital on Thursday morning. He was cremated later in the afternoon.
Manna Dey was taken to ICU on Wednesday to be treated for his respiratory illness. He has been in and out of hospital the last few months and was on dialysis since September.
Born in Kolkata, the Dadasaheb Phalke and Padma Shri awardee currently resides in Bangalore after spending more than 50 years in Mumbai.
Dey, who started his playback career with 1943 film 'Tamanna', has sung nearly 3,500 songs in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada and Assamese films.
His hit numbers include songs like 'Puchho na kaise', 'aye meri zoharajabi', 'Laga chunri mein daag' and 'Pyaar hua ikrar hua'.
Manna also has in his credit to sang in many Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Punjabi and Bhojpuri.
Songs including Zindagi Kaise Hai Paheli from movie Anand, Ae Meri Zohrajabeen from movie Waqt are also in his credit.
His daughter Shumita Deb and his son-in-law Jnanranjan Deb were by his side during his last moments.
Dey’s family comprise of two daughters, one of whom is based in the US. "We are saddened by his loss, but he died peacefully. His last rites will be performed later in the day," his son-in-law said.
