New Delhi:

The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that red beacon will be only provided to vehicles carrying people holding constitutional posts and high dignitaries.

The apex court also mentioned that state governments cannot enlarge list of VIPs to be given red beacon on their vehicles.

Earlier, on August 5, SC came down heavily on misuse of beacon lights and multi-tone horns on roads by calling the misuse a 'menace to the society'.

The apex court also said that no one apart from high ranking dignitaries, ambulance, police and military must be allowed to use these services.

Calling the misuse a "menace to the society", the apex body said that violators need to be dealt with a heavy hand and must be fined.

In a move to bring more restrictions into practice, SC also asked all states to compile a list of all VIPs who are assigned red lights.

Earlier, in a report UP government submitted that from April to June 500 hooters, 150 red lights were removed. The report also informed that the removal drive continues in some areas.

Speaking on the issue, Omar Abdullah said, "I must admit I'll be happy to see this red beacon culture go. I never use one on my private vehicles & don't see the need for one anyway."
