A look at the financial declarations of candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections and you will shake your heads in disbelief at the financial worth of politicians who have for the first time in a national election declared their assets running into millions of rupees.

Despite choosing a career that ostensibly brings poor returns for serving the people and governing, politicians appear to be among the richest in the country.

We bring you a list of India's richest MPs in the wake of Lok Sabha polls 2014:

Narendra modi: BJP's PM nominee Narendra Modi, who is contesting from Vadodara Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat, has declared his total assets at Rs 1.51 crore and he does not own any vehicle.

As per his affidavit filed along with the nomination papers yesterday, Modi declared his movable assets at Rs 51,57,582 which include cash in banks and fixed deposits, cash in hand at Rs 29,700 and valuation of four rings at Rs 1.35 lakh.

Modi doesn't own any vehicle and has not bought any jewellery in the last two years.

Modi owns a residential house in Gandhinagar, worth around Rs 1 crore and does not own any other property or land besides this house, the declaration says.

Rahul Gandhi: Rahul Gandhi’s immovable assets have shown a decline since 2009 but the value of total assets has doubled to Rs.9.4 crore in the last five years.

In the affidavit filed by him along with his nomination papers today, he has disclosed that the total value of his real estate assets (including the advance of Rs.6.8 crore paid on property) has increased from Rs.4.4 crore in 2009 to Rs.8.2 crore now, an increase of about 86 per cent.

The doubling of the total value of the assets from Rs.4.7 crore  to Rs.9.4 crore has been primarily due to appreciation in property prices.

Sonia Gandhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi has assets worth over Rs.9.28 crore though she does not have a vehicle in her name.

She has movable assets worth Rs. 2.81 crore and immovable assets worth Rs. 6.47 crore, according to the affidavit submitted along with her nomination papers she filed from the Rae Bareli seat.

Arvind Kejriwal: Aam Aadmi Party convener Arvind Kejriwal has declared assets worth Rs 93 lakh and liablity of Rs 23,550 of unpaid electricity bills.

Kejriwal, who filed his nominations today from New Delhi assembly constituency, has declared in his affidavit along with the nomination papers, that he has moveable assets which includes cash-in-hand and bank deposits worth Rs 1.6 lakh.

Arun jaitley: A fleet of luxury cars, residential houses in Delhi, NCR and Gujarat, besides cash and jewellery, are part of the Rs.113.02 crore worth assets of senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley declared in an affidavit filed in Amritsar.

Mulayam Singh: Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has movable and immovable assets valued at around Rs 11.82 crore while his wife Sadhna Yadav is the owner of property valued at Rs 4.13 crores.

Kumar Vishwas: Kumar has declared assets including that of his wife Manju Sharma. As per the affidavit, while gross total value of Kumar's movable assets is more than Rs 1.28 crore, that of his wife is more than Rs 56 lakh.

Maneka Gandhi: Maneka has declared assets worth Rs 37.41 crore - movable assets of Rs 12.46 crore and immovable assets of Rs 24.95 crore - in her self-sworn affidavit filed before Election Commission.

Hema Malini: Hema’s bank balance is Rs.1,12,07,734, while her husband's bank balance is Rs.33,25,797.

Poonam Mahajan: Promod Mahajan’s daughter’s assets include Rs.4.40-crore immovable and Rs.7.68-crore movable property, according to the affidavit submitted by her before election authorities here while filing the nomination papers.

Rabri Devi: 45 cows, 20 calves and a double barrel gun with 50 cartridges are among the possessions of Rabri Devi, whose total assets are worth Rs 6.5 crore, and she earns more than her husband and RJD chief Lalu Prasad, who cannot contest polls due to conviction in a fodder scam case.

Nandan Nilekani: And, last but not the least, Nilekani and his wife Rohini hold assets worth Rs 7,700 crore, by far the highest for any candidate in the upcoming general election. One of the founding members of Infosys, Nilekani grew from Rs 200 to Rs 7,700 crore with the success of a company built from scratch.
