Hyderabad:

Telangana Government has requested its Andhra Pradesh counterpart not to impound water into Pulichintala irrigation project as it is causing submergence of several villages in Nalgonda district and resulting in misery to the inhabitants there.

Telangana Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma has written a letter in this regard to his AP counterpart I Y R Krishna Rao.

The Dr K L Rao Sagar Pulichintala project on river Krishna, which was commissioned before bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, has a total storage capacity of 45 TMC of water.

In the letter, Sharma said in view of copious releases from Nagarjuna Sagar the water is being impounded in Pulichintala project.

The State of Andhra Pradesh started impounding the water without providing resources for rehabilitation and resettlement of villages in Nalgonda district. Due to this, several villages of Nalgonda are submerged, he said.

Sharma requested Rao to direct the staff concerned not to impound water without completing rehabilitation and resettlement work in the district.

In an identical letter, Sharma brought the issue to the notice of Alok Rawat, Secretary, Water Resources, Government of India, and requested him to direct the AP Government not to go ahead with the impounding of water.

Telangana Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao spoke to Aditya Nath Das, AP’s Irrigation Secretary, and demanded compensation for the affected villages.
