New Delhi:

If light is one significant aspect of Diwali, beautifully decorated Rangoli is another important aspect which cannot be missed. Both lights and colours play a big role in this festival. The traditional colourful patterns that grace the entrance of a house can mesmerize anybody.

Rangoli is a timeless tradition that is followed across the country. Also known as alpana, aripoma and kolam it is an ancient art practiced by many households.

A rangoli design is created at the entrance of the house, not only to welcome the guests that visit, but also the goddess herself.

The word Rangoli is set to be derived from rang and aavali, which means a row of colours.

Some basic patterns like a geometrical structure which are also symmetrical in nature are usually followed to make a Rangoli. The design patterns often consist of flowers, animals, designs etc.

Rangoli patterns are usually made using coloured chalk, rice powder, and crushed limestone. The variety and the patterns usually differ from person to person. Themes are also followed, where a symbol or motif is used to depict the deity.

Different traditions of rangolis are followed by different states. In Bihar, Lakshmi's footprints are drawn to welcome the goddess. In Andhra Pradesh, an eight petal lotus known as 'ashtdal kamal' is created while in Tamil Nadu an eight pointed star, referred to as 'hridaya kamal' is designed.

No matter the design, Diwali is incomplete without the traditional rangoli to welcome guests, both divine and human.

So, create a rangoli at your house and surprise your guests!
