Beijing:

A black bear ripped off a nine-year-old boy's arm in a zoo in China after he tried to feed the animal through the bars of its cage.

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon at a zoo inside Pingdingshan Hebin Park in China's Henan province, South China Morning Post reported.

The boy, who has not been identified, had visited the park with his grandfather but was exploring the zoo on his own when he came across the bear exhibit.

When the boy stuck his right arm into the bars of the bear's cage in an attempt to feed it, the animal ripped off his arm.

The boy was rushed to hospital where doctors amputated what was left of his right arm. He is now in a stable condition.

Last year, a monkey at a zoo in Guiyang, the capital of China's Guizhou province, attacked an eight-month-old baby, ripping off one of his testicles.

The incident sparked outrage and concern over Guiyang Qianling Wildlife Park's policy of allowing dozens of monkeys to roam freely around the grounds of the zoo.
