New Delhi:

Swami Nawal Kishor Das and Shastri Avadhesh share with News Nation the significance and method of performing Laxmi Puja on Diwali. Swami Nawal Kishor Das says that in business establishments or shops, the puja is performed in the afternoon, while in homes it is done in the evening. The mahurat for Laxmi Pujan this year is 5:40 PM to 8:00 PM.

The pooja vidhi is similar. He says people should happily perform the puja with their family. Your puja will be successful only if you are happy from inside, he says.

"Maha Laxmi Pujan is performed to end the darkness in life and go towards the light. Since the festival’s name is Deepawali, it is important to light diyas everywhere and there should not be darkness," says Shastri Avadhesh.

"‘Deep daan’ is very important during Laxmi Puja. Diya holds great significance in Diwali. In shastras, the meaning of Laxmi Puja is to destroy the darkness (Tamaso Maa Jyotir Gamaya)," he says.

The following Puja Vidhi has been described by Shastri Avadhesh:

  • Buy Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi idol. One can buy earthen idols, silver or metal ones
  • The Goddess Laxmi should be in a blessing posture or mudra
  • Take a wooden chauki and cover it with a yellow or white cloth
  • Place the idols on the chauki
  • Offer red flowers, if you can arrange lotus flower, even better
  • Give bath to Laxmi and Ganesha using panchamitra
  • Wrap the deities in new clothes, apply chandan on Laxmi and Ganesha’s forehead
  • Offer fruits, garlands, flowers, sweets, dhoop, incense sticks and prasad
  • Offer Khil and batasa, make prasad using dhaniya seeds as it is offered to Goddess Laxmi
  • Some people also worship Kuber during Laxmi Pujan. They worship their account books and even weighing scales and machines
  • Light diya using ghee. If one cannot afford ghee can use sesame seed (til) oil or mustard oil
