Johannesburg:

Stanislas Wawrinka has said that they made many sacrifices during the years to be able to win the Davis Cup after 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer battled a back problem to help Switzerland bag their first trophy.

ATP number four Wawrinka, who has been a Davis stalwart over the years while Federer’s presences have been intermittent, said that it has clearly been an exceptional year for him, adding that he has been dreaming of this Davis Cup for years.

Wawrinka said that he has been trying everything he could to win this competition. He added that with Severin, with Roger, Michael Lammer and Marco Chiudinelli, all the staff, they had many experiences together during the past years, a new channel reported.

He said that this was maybe the ideal year, it started off very well in Serbia, adding that it ends up perfectly well here in France.

Meanwhile, Federer has only days to finish up final healing on a back problem after clinching a first Davis Cup title for Switzerland. The world number two will fly out next week to India to play a handful of matches in the new International Professional Tennis League, a 10-day, four-city league designed to bring tennis to eager Asian audiences.

The Swiss is due to head immediately for his base in Dubai and be within striking distance of India, where he would play in ties for the Indian Acres squad on a lightning visit to the subcontinent.

Federer’s straight-set reverse singles win on Sunday in Lille, northern France, over Richard Gasquet gave the Swiss a 3-1 win over France and wrote another page in the Federer legend.

He compared the joy of winning the Davis Cup to that he experienced in 2008 when he and teammate Wawrinka won the Beijing Olympic gold medal. He said that it’s been a great few years they have had together, as well as the rest of the team, this is something for them to share, like the Olympic gold, other great moments they had in their career.

Federer also said that he had a blast playing the match that helped Switzerland win the Davis cup, adding that he thought it was a privilege. He said that he can’t thank Wawrinka enough for the effort he’s put in this weekend to build him back up.

Federer said that the same goes for captain Severin Luthi, adding that they were just keeping him alive really.
