PM Modi recalls Manmohan Singh's view for re-look at Planning Commission

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday recalled his predecessor Dr. Manmohan Singh's remarks regarding the Planning Commission, and reiterated that the body should be replaced by an organization which can think creatively, strengthen the federal structure, and energize states.

Expressing satisfaction with the significant suggestions offered by various Chief Ministers during the meeting, Prime Minister Modi referred to the remarks made by Dr. Singh on April 30, 2014, regarding the Planning Commission.

"Dr. Manmohan Singh , who had been associated for a long time with the Planning Commission, on April 30 this year, had noted that the body has no futuristic vision in the post-reform period. He had also noted that the Planning Commission would have to reinvent itself to remain more effective and relevant in the present situation," the Prime Minister said in his concluding remarks at the consultation meeting with the Chief Ministers on replacing the Planning Commission.

The Prime Minister also recalled his earlier statement regarding the Planning Commission.

"On Independence Day, I had said that the Planning Commission should be replaced by an organization which can think creatively, strengthen the federal structure, and energize states," he said.

Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh met the Chief Ministers today to discuss various aspects relating to restructuring of the Planning Commission.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister sought the views of the Chief Ministers regarding the structure, scope and role of the new body that will replace the Planning Commission.
