Paris:

Cycling will be part of the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, despite initially being left off the list of sports due to an administrative oversight, the International Cycling Union (UCI) confirmed.

“Cycling will be part of the Paralympic programme where it has been part of the Games for more than 30 years, dating back to the 1984 Los Angeles Games,” the UCI underlined, approving the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) decision.

When the initial list of 16 sports was published last October, cycling did not appear alongside major disciplines like athletics, rowing, swimming and tennis.

But Swiss media put the omission down to an administrative oversight. It was also announced that badminton and taekwondo will appear for the first time at the paralympics although seven-a-side football and sailing were not included as one of the 22 sports announced, with the maximum set at 23.

“I would like to thank the 24 candidate sports put forward for the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020 and congratulate the 22 sports which have been approved by the committee director of the IPC,” said IPC president Philip Craven.
