With Delhi elections counting finally over, Aam Aadmi Party has returned to rule the roost of politics in the national capital. On one hand where AAP office was in the festive mood, gloom and dismay ruled Congress and BJP headquarters in the state. Let us take a look at the aftermath of Delhi poll verdict.
BJP’s Chief Ministerial nominee Kiran Bedi who was provided Y-plus security ahead of the Delhi Assembly polls, today returned her security cover after facing a shocking defeat at the hands of AAP.
Bedi who had earlier in the day offered her apologies for not being able to live up to the xpectations of the BJP, stepped out of her house in the evening for a short while to speak to one of the security personnel deputed for her security.
Calling the Aam Aadmi Party’s victory in the Delhi Assembly polls as ‘historic’, yoga guru Baba Ramdev today greeted party convener Arvind Kejriwal and expressed hope that he would fulfil his promises.
“AAP has registered historic ‘maha vijay’. I congratulate Kejriwal on this victory and hope he will fulfil the promises made to the people of Delhi,” Ramdev told reporters.
Delhi Cong chief Lovely resigns over poll debacle
Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely today tendered his resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi after taking moral responsibility for the party’s worst-ever performance in the Assembly elections.
However, it is not clear whether his resignation letter has been accepted by the senior leadership.
Congress failed to win even one seat in these polls, which saw AAP emerge as the runaway winner with BJP ending a distant second.
Delhi poll result ‘victory of anti-BJPism’: Vaidya
Aam Aadmi Party’s stupendous win in Delhi is a victory of “anti-BJPism”, RSS ideologue M G Vaidya said today.
“All anti-BJP parties and groups and groups joined hands in support of AAP and this was the reason for the unexpected results,” he said on being asked about the Delhi poll outcome. AAP swept the polls winning 67 of the 70 seats and BJP got a paltry three.
63 out of 70 Congress candidates forfeit deposit
63 of the 70 Congress candidates, including senior leaders Ajay Maken, Kiran Walia, Haroon Yousuf and Yoganand Shastri, forfeited their deposit in the Delhi Assembly polls, which witnessed AAP’s landslide victory.
President Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee also lost her deposit from the prestigious Greater Kailash seat.
While they could not win a single seat, candidates from seven constituencies, including Badli, Chandni Chowk, Jangpura, Laxmi Nagar and Matia Mahal, managed to save their deposit.
In Sadar Bazar constituency, Congress face for Delhi election, Maken, polled 16,331 votes. While AAP’s Som Dutt bagged 67,507 votes and won the election, BJP’s Praveen Kumar Jain got second position with 33,192 votes.
Former Delhi Minister Kiran Walia was washed away in the AAP wave, managing a mere 4781 votes in the New Delhi constituency. AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal got 57,213 votes and won the seat with a handsome margin.
Deposits of three BJP candidates were also forfeited, including in Badli.
Although no AAP candidate lost deposit, the party came third in Mustafabad seat.
Housewives remained hooked to TV, rejoice AAP’s victory
With rising prices of household items and security in their minds, housewives in the national capital were also glued to the TV sets as they intensely followed the counting results.
While carrying out their daily chores, housewives discussed about the poll results broadcast by the TV channels as they kept exchanging thoughts and reactions.
Many had stepped out of their houses to get a glimpse of former IPS officer and BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi, but in their minds they were pretty clear about whom to cast their vote for and had voted for AAP keeping in mind the safety of women and increasing budget of their household.
44-year old Renu Dixit, a resident of Trilokpuri had no dilemma when she went to the polling station to cast her ballot on February 7.
Kejriwal’s village jubilant over AAP’s resounding victory As Aam Aadmi Party today scored a thumping majority in the Delhi Assembly elections, jubilation among residents of its chief Arvind Kejriwal’s native village was evident as many distributed sweets and burst crackers to mark “people’s victory”.
A dusty village in the Bhiwani region of Haryana that has produced three chief ministers celebrated the success of its native Kejriwal, who will take oath as Delhi’s chief minister on February 14.
Terming the mandate received by AAP “unprecedented”, German Ambassador Michael Steiner today said that the verdict only reaffirmed the fact that the Indian voter can never be “taken for granted”.
He further said that Indian democracy is not “necessarily predictable” in throwing up results and that Germany was watching the situation with “great interest”.
“This (AAP win) only confirms my conviction that the Indian voter can never be taken for granted and that Indian democracy is well alive and kicking,” Steiner said at the sidelines of an event in the national capital.
