Washington:

A new study has found that people who watch sad movies tend to gain weight as they eat 28-55 per cent more than watching other upbeat movies.

The study conducted by Cornell Food and Brand Lab observed in their research that movie goers ate 28 per cent more popcorn, which was 125 versus 98 grams, when watching the tragedy like ‘Love Story’ than when watching the comedy like ‘Home Alabama’.

Cornell Professor Brian Wansink, lead author said that sad movies also lead people to eat more of any healthy food that’s in front of them, so keeping more fruit or veggies within arm’s reach while watching tragic movies could be helpful in other way.

Cornell, a co-author informed that with action movies, people seem to eat to the pace of the movie, but movies can also generate emotional eating, and people might eat to compensate for sadness.

The study is published in a JAMA Internal Medicine research letter.
