Bengaluru:

Nearly 100 people from Karnataka have been stranded following the massive earthquake which rocked Nepal today.

“Nearly 100 people from the state have been stranded in Nepal where a massive earthquake hit the country,” Umesh Kumar, IGP, Northern Range, told PTI here.

Karnataka Government has deputed Kumar and senior IAS officer Pankaj Kumar Pande to go to Nepal to ensure safe evacuation of people from the state.

Kumar said both he and Pande will be reaching Nepal tomorrow to begin relief operations. “We both will be reaching Nepal tomorrow,” he said.

Kumar said all the people are safe. “They are in the open.  Everyone whom we are in touch are safe. There has been no damage suffered of any sorts,” he said.

According to a government release, 85 persons from Karnataka, who were on a visit to Nepal through a travel agency when the earthquake rocked the nation are expected to reach Varanasi by road by tomorrow evening.

Asked whether the stranded people will be airlifted, Kumar said, “I do not have that much of an idea. Once I will reach Nepal, I can be in a position to tell.”

Tourists from Dakshin Kannada who went Nepal are also safe and some of them have already reached New Delhi, according to a Mangaluru-based travel agency official.

“As many as nine tourists will be reaching New Delh in a day or two and then reach Mangaluru,” he said.

Another group of 30 who had been to Pokhra, about 80 km away from the epicentre of the earthquake, have already reached New Delhi, the agent said.

As many as 35 people from Belagavi are safe since they were no where near the tragedy sites, according to Belgavi District Police.

The whereabouts of 35 people from Pandavpura is unknown, district police said.

A woman from Davangere city has been missing since last afternoon. “She spoke to us this morning, but since afternoon, she is not reachable - her mobile is switched off,” according to family members.
