New Delhi:

On 26th May 2014, Narendra Damodardas Modi took oath as the 15th Prime Minister of India and became the second for the BJP after Atal Bihari Vajpayee to do so. The BJP with huge gains recorded its best every tally of 282 seats of its own across the country. The landslide victory was the second best since 1984, when Congress under Rajiv Gandhi won 414 seats. Also for the first time in history of Independent India, a non-Congress party has won majority of its own.

The victory was so huge, that the Congress party was limited to just 44 seats and many parties like BSP, DMK, RLD were unable to open their account. Even, the Congress was also denied the Leader of Opposition seat in the Lower House.

With the Modi government completing one year in office, the Congress too is a year old as the principal opposition party in both the Houses.

Acting aggressively, the Congress party in last few days held press conferences across 25 cities and slammed the Modi government. Their main agenda is to showcase the failures of the Centre.

The Congress party claimed the BJP showed tsunami of promises and dreams before the polls but forgotten after came to power. Congress senior leader Anand Sharma added, the BJP slogan ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vvikas’ has changed to ‘Sabka Saath, Kuck Ka Vikas’.

In a rare attack, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi criticized the government for not fulfilling posts of Chief Information Commissioner and the Central Vigilance Commissioners and also termed the government’s act to change in RTI as a brutal attack on autonomy.

The huge blow to the Congress was the two-month-long sabbatical of vice president Rahul Gandhi. But the Gandhi scion returned with a bang and his five speeches in last session alone was compared to his all during the UPA’s 10-year tenure. He was slammed by the opposition for missing the entire Budget session.  The BJP leaders’ even claim Rahul’s repackaging image is more to impress the Congress' own members than them. They went to say, the Amethi MP is just trying to record his presence by doing all the rallies in recent past.

Now, the Congress is carefully crafting its strategy to tackle the rising BJP across the nation. The Congress lost badly in Maharashtra, Haryana, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and Jharkhand state polls. For the Congress, upcoming state polls will be important to test their capability and to make a political comeback.

However, it doesn’t seems too good for the Century-old party as in Bihar they heavily depended on their allies and hardly has presence. In Kerala and Assam, the state government are facing strong anti-incumbency and in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, the party is weak and searching its foothold.

The Congress needs to work on the grass root level to hope for some revival in near future.
