Ahmedabad:

Self-styled godman Asaram’s son Narayan Sai, a rape accused, was sent back to Surat’s Lajpore Jail after doctors of a private hospital decided not to conduct surgery for his mother’s cervical ailment, a police official said here today.

“Narayan Sai was sent to Lajpore jail in Surat city, after a panel of doctors at Sterling Hospital here decided not to conduct his mother Lakshmiben’s surgery for a cervical ailment,” Vastrapur police station inspector M S Shaikh said.

Sai was granted bail by the Gujarat High Court on the condition that if his mother’s surgery is not conducted within four days from May 25, he would have to surrender, Shaikh said.

After a doctors’ panel at Sterling Hospital conducted a few tests on Laxmiben and found that she is also suffering from blood pressure as well as heart-related illness, it was decided that surgery was not possible, he said.

“We informed Lajpore police station in Surat about the development and asked them to take Sai to jail,” Shaikh said.

After spending 17 months in Jail, Sai was released from Lajpore central prison in Surat on May 26 on temporary bail.

The development came after the Gujarat High Court granted bail to Sai on May 25, stating he would have to surrender in four days from the date of his release, if his mother’s surgery did not take place by then.

Sai has been behind bars since December 2013 after a rape case filed by one of two Surat-based sisters, who also lodged two different rape complaints against him as well as his father Asaram.

Sai’s mother was also booked in the alleged rape case filed against Asaram by one of the sisters. Later, she was granted bail.

Sai was booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rape, molestation and wrongful confinement.

In her complaint, the younger of the two sisters had accused Sai of repeated sexual assault between 2002 and 2005 when she was living at his Surat ashram.
