New Delhi:

Remember, how Dimple Kapadia’s shining career saw a full stop after she got married to Rajesh Khanna. Jaya Bachchan had to leave all her popularity to get hitched to Amitabh Bachchan, Neetu Singh left acting after tying knot with Rishi Kapoor. What started in 70s had no end in any point near.

This highly regressive trend of killing an actress’ glorious career just for sake a marriage gets married even continued to the modern era of film making. In 1999, we saw Madhuri Dixit getting married and biding adieu to her glinting career just after wrapping-up the shoot of 'Devdaas', and then non-acceptance for her after she tried to make a come-back into Bollywood. Same happened with many actresses like Karisma Kapoor, Sonali Bendre, Amrita Singh, Shilpa Shetty who tried vigorous efforts but didn’t get befitting acceptance from the industry.

The reason for their fate was nothing but patriarchal society and the industry derived by it. It’s always like-‘yeh heroine to us hero biwi hai’-the conservative trend of watching a woman as husband’s property.

The cruel trend got a challenge from rock solid Aishwarya Rai and Kajol who defied all the Taboos and gave power-packed performances after their comebacks. Kajol almost mesmerised everyone by her performances in Fanaa and ‘My Name is Khan’.

In quite a same manner, Aishwarya never bid adieu to her acting career, she appeared in ‘Action Replay’ opposite Akshay Kumar after her much-hyped wedding with Abhishek Bacchan. After taking a necessary sabbatical at the time of daughter Aradhya’s birth, she is now back to business with glitz added glamour. Aishwarya is currently having three projects at hand - Jazbaa, a biopic on Sarabjeet, 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

The most recent example is Kareena Kapoor(Khan), who never let her ‘married’ status over-shadow her acting career. In fact, she took her career to new heights and gave hits like Talaash, Gabbar is Back, Bajrangi Bhaijaan after once she got hitched to Saif Ali Khan.

The Taboo-breaker trend set by Aishwarya, Kareena and Kajol is now being followed by gen y actresses like Radhika apte, Jenelia D’souza etc. who are also willing to take their career forward after marriage.

Anyways, it’s good that industry is now accepting married actresses and we really wish to see more of them.
