Kolkata:

West Bengal government today assured trade bodies that it will compensate in case of any damage or loss to open shops during bandh on September, an official of a retailers trade body said after a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today assured us to remain beside the traders in case we face any problem in keeping our shops open tomorrow. She also assured us police protection and compensation in case of any damage,” Ravindra Nath Koley, member of the task force on agricultural products price, said at the state secretariat after a meeting.

Banerjee had said earlier that she wants to finish the bandh and strike culture from Bengal and hence requested all to oppose the nation-wide strike call by central trade unions.

Koley said Banerjee told them she is trying to introduce insurance protection in such events.

Speaking about high retail price of vegetables, Koley said prices have soared due to floods and excessive rainfall causing damage to crop.

However, prices will come down slowly with fresh harvest of vegetables while onion prices have already started to ease, he said.
