Bharatiya Janata Party’s BS Yeddyurappa on Thursday took oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, even as his party was short of simple majority. However, Congress and Janata Dal-Secular remain unrelenting and protested strongly.
Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala on Wednesday invited Yeddyurappa, the legislative leader of the single largest party, to form the government.
Despite emerging as the single largest party, the BJP fell short of the majority in the Karnataka Assembly elections and the Governor has given 15 days time to Yeddyurappa to prove majority on the floor of Assembly.
However, the Congress, which tied up with the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) to keep the BJP out of power cried foul and moved the Supreme Court against the “encounter of Constitution”. In a rare post-midnight hearing, the Supreme Court refused to stay BS Yeddyurappa’s swearing-in as the state chief minister.

# 08:50 PM: I condemn horse trading, in general, as it's bad for all. We always respect democratic institutions. Problem is today somebody may come in power & tomorrow he may not be in power but if we violate the constitution, it's going to have an adverse effect on us: WB CM Mamata Banerjee
# 08:40 PM: In constitution there's no separate rule for Goa & K'taka. Though Guv committed mistake in 2017 she has chance to rectify it now. We're confident. Guv has given time for 11.30 am tomorrow. I'll go with MLAs to meet her & stake our claim to form govt: Chella Kumar, Goa in-charge

# 07:20 PM: Whatever BJP's done in Karnataka is in accordance with rule book. Congress is ill informed & as a result is making these funny claims. They don't have faith on their MLAs as they have held them captive in a resort. JDS & Congress are scared after being exposed: Prakash Javadekar
# 07:15 PM: How will BJP prove majority? Amit Shah has only one formula, horse-trading or sending agencies like CBI & ED behind MLAs of other parties. It's dictatorship by BJP. If we aren't united today then it was Bihar y'day, Karnataka today, can be MP or Rajasthan tomorrow: Tejashwi Yadav
# 07:15 PM: Party has decided that we'll meet Guv at 1 pm tomorrow & demand that like BJP, the single largest party in Karnataka, was called to form the govt, similarly the current govt here be dissolved & the single largest party, RJD, be invited to form the govt: Tejashwi Yadav, RJD

The party is at least 8 seats short of the majority.
#08:00 AM: The post-midnight drama: Congress filed a petition against Governor's invitation to Yeddyurappa and urged Chief Justice Dipak Misra to hold an urgent hearing. CJI Misra constituted a three-judge bench of Justice AK Sikri, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice Gobde to hear the petition. The Congress-JD-S please said, "Court may pass an order declaring order of Governor inviting BS Yeddyurappa to form govt as unconstitutional and quash the same, or, pass direction to Guv to invite alliance of INC & JD(S) which has support of more than 112 MLAs to form gov." However, the apex court refused to stay the swearing-in ceremony of Yeddyurappa but said that it will be subject to outcome of writ petition filed by Congress & JD(S).
