Tata Sons on Thursday announced the appointment of Natarajan Chandrasekaran as their new chairman, according to agency reports.

Natarajan Chandrasekaran is currently serving as the CEO and managing director of Tata Consultancy Services. Mr Chandrasekaran will take over from Ratan Tata, who returned as interim chief of the Tata group following Cyrus Mistry's ouster. Ratan Tata had headed the Tata group for 21 years before Cyus Mistry took over as chairman in 2012.

The appointment finally lays rest to the long period of unrest and trumoil in the diversified conglomerate's top management post the ouster of Cyrus Mistry as their group chairman.

Natarajan Chandrasekaran has been the driving force behind Tata Consultancy services emerging as one of the top information technology service, consulting and business solutions company companies in India.

Early Life and Family

Chandrasekaran was born in a Tamil family in Mohanur, Tamil Nadu. He currently resides in Mumbai, with his wife Lalitha and their son, Pranav. He is an keen photographer, music buff and a passionate long-distance runner who has completed marathons in Amsterdam, Boston, Chicago, Berlin, Mumbai, New York and Tokyo.

Education

Chandrasekaran completed his Bachelor of Science in Applied Sciences from the Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu post which he pursued his Masters in Computer Applications from Regional Engineering College, Trichy, (now National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli) in Tamil Nadu. 

Career in TCS

Chandrasekaran joined TCS in 1987. Under his leadership TCS generated consolidated revenues of US $16.5 billion in 2015-16. Under Chandra’s leadership, TCS was rated as the world's most powerful brand in IT Services in 2015 and was recognised as a Global Top Employer by the Top Employers Institute across 24 countries.

Chandra exemplified TCS’ commitment to a culture of customer centricity, its reputation for long-term customer partnerships as its tradition of re-invention and innovation.

An entrepreneur known for his ability to make big decisions on new technology, Chandrasekaran has been driving TCS’ strong foray in the emerging Digital Economy with a combination of innovative Digital products and platforms for enterprises, some of which have since scaled into sizeable new businesses.

On October 25, 2016 N. Chandrasekaran, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), was appointed as Additional Director on the Tata Sons Board.

Chandrasekaran took over as the CEO on October 6, 2009 prior to which he was Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Executive Director of TCS. Born in 1963, Chandra is one of the youngest CEOs of the Tata Group.

Chandra has been bestowed with several awards and recognition all through his career. Reserve Bank of India appointed him as director on its board in 2016. He has served as the Chairperson of the IT Industry Governors’ at the WEF, Davos in 2015-16.
