New Delhi:

Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das on Wednesday tweeted that there were no plans to introduce new series of Rs 1000 currency denomination notes in the immediate future as the government's primary focus was on production & supply of ₹500 & lower denomination notes.

Shaktikanta Das backed his statement by tweeting that complaints of cash out in ATMs are being addressed. He requested the citizens to draw cash they actually feed the need to do so.

There were reports on Tuesday that Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was geared up to introduce a new series of Rs 1000 note with improvised design soon as it was withdrawn from market after announcement of demonetisation on November 8, 2016.

A senior government official divulged to a leading journal that the government had already started printing the notes but high demand of Rs 500 notes shoved it at the backburner. He said the government was planning to introduce it in the month of January.
