New Delhi:

In what could be a big worry for netizens across India, the petrol and diesel prices are heading towards century mark with the rates touching a new high yet again on Monday, September 17, 2018. In Delhi, a litre of petrol is being sold for Rs 82.06 while diesel costs Rs 73.78 per litre on Monday. Hence, there is a surge of 15 paise and 06 paise in prices of petrol and diesel respectively in the national capital.

In Mumbai, petrol price has increased by 15 paise a litre and diesel by 07 paise per litre on Monday. The latest hike pushed the petrol price in Mumbai to a record high of Rs 89.44 per litre while Diesel rate touched its highest level of Rs 78.33 a litre.

"Petrol at Rs 82.06/litre (increase by Rs 0.15/litre) and diesel at Rs 73.78/litre (increase by Rs 0.6/litre) in Delhi. Petrol at Rs 89.44/litre (increase by Rs 0.15/litre) and diesel at Rs 78.33/litre (increase by Rs 0.7/litre) in Mumbai," the news agency ANI reported.

The new prices have been made effective from 6 am on September 17, 2018.

Fuel prices have been surging since August 16, up almost every day owing to a drop in rupee value and rise in crude oil rates. These small daily revisions have added up to a big hike in nearly a month. Almost half of the retail selling price of the two fuels is made up of central and state taxes.

Earlier the Modi government assured that this increase in oil prices is really temporary, no significant steps have been taken so far to decline the same.

On Sunday, Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev has given a mouth-watering offer that would result into price drop of petrol and diesel up to Rs 35-40 per litre. The offer, however, is conditional and given the government’s track record in the last four years, it is highly unlikely that the Centre will consider it.

Speaking at the NDTV's youth conclave, the yoga guru-turned businessman said that the skyrocketing fuel prices can cost the Modi government dearly in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. “If the government lets me, and gives some relief in tax, I can give petrol diesel to India at Rs. 35-40 per litre,” the yoga-guru-turned-businessman said.
