At least one person was killed and scores others sustained serious injuries after a portion of arterial Majerhat bridge in south Kolkata collapsed on Tuesday, police said. The bridge on Diamond Harbour Road reportedly collapsed at around 4:45 PM in the evening. The bridge collapsed in Alipore area also crushing some vehicles, they said. Fire brigade, police and NDRF personnel rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operation. The tragedy happened two years after the collapse of the under-construction Vivekanand flyover in Kolkata, in which over 20 people were killed.
