Tony Awards have announced a special honour for renowned musician Bruce Springsteen for his solo production Springsteen on Broadway.
He will be receiving the honour in June for his show which became the highest grossing new production of the 2017-18 season, the Tony Awards Administration Committee announced.
The show, which is an intimate blend of autobiographical solo play and acoustic concert, is “a once-in-a-lifetime theater-going experience for the Broadway stage, allowing fans an intimate look at a music idol," said the committee.
Notably, this will be the first time that Springsteen will get a Tony Award. He has earlier won 20 Grammys, one Academy Award and four AMAs, etc.
Talking about Springsteen on Broadway, the show was launched on October 3 last year and went on to receive rave reviews from the audience. Interestingly it was initially scheduled to have a limited engagement but extended its run thrice given the stupendous response from the audience.
The limited engagement initially was scheduled to run through November 26, but overwhelming ticket demand along with Springsteen's engagement with the crowd - 939 people a night - have prompted him to extend the concert multiple times.
Following a brief hiatus, the show is now back on the boards and selling through December 15.
A total sellout, with barely four shows for weeks, the production has been pulling in close to USD 2 million - the figure climbing to USD 2.4 million on five-performance weeks.
The average ticket price has remained around USD 500 throughout the run, with cumulative box office currently at USD 55 million.
