The latest spat between comedian Kapil Sharma and his comrade Sunil Grover on a return flight from Australia cannot be just a brotherly ‘after-drinks brawl’.
It might have been a tiny spark that had been searching for a medium to turn itself into an inferno. Sunil Grover and Kapil Sharma became the two undisputed stalwarts of Indian television industry by redefining the means of comedy through their acts.
’The Kapil Sharma Show’, through which Kapil re-launched or re-branded himself and his fellow actors, became an instant hit. The sets, the theme, the get-up, the enactment of various acts and more importantly, the participation of national and international celebrities gave this show an iconic stature.
While Kapil Sharma was the main attraction of TKSS, Sunil Grover became its necessity through his acts, first as ‘Gutthi’ and later as Dr Mashhoor Gulati and Rinku Bhabhi.
One cannot afford to ignore his presence at the stage and his smart improvisation in all the acts.
Here is what happened
Sunil broke his silence on the ongoing tussle between him and Kapil by sharing a note on social media on Tuesday in which he asked the comedian to "start respecting human beings".
Kapil had dismissed their feud while aboard a flight as "an argument" in a Facebook post on Monday but Sunil, in his tweet on Tuesday, indicated that all was not well between them.
"Bhai ji! Yes, You hurt me deeply. We with you has been a learning experience. Just one advice start respecting human beings also apart from animals. All are not as successful as you are. All are not as talented as you are. But if they all are talented like you, who will value you (sic)," Sunil wrote. "So, have some gratitude towards their existence. And also, If someone is correcting you, don't abuse that person. Refrain from using foul language In front of women who had nothing to do with the stardom you carry, they are by chance just traveling with you (sic)." Sunil, who plays the popular characters of Dr Mashoor Gulati and Rinku Bhabhi on Kapil's show, further wrote, "thanks for making me realise it was your show and you have power to throw out anybody, anytime. "You are the wittiest, and the best in your field. But don't act like a 'God'. Take good care of yourself. Wish you lot more success and fame."
Minutes after Sunil's tweet, Kapil replied, "@WhoSunilGrover today packed up at 6am after so long and I missed so many things... Love you... See you in the evening at your home."
After the fight, Kapil had posted a long note on Facebook, saying they had an argument but it was nothing serious as he loved Sunil like his elder brother. "Yes I had a argument with him. But are we not normal people? I shouted at him first time in five years.. 'itna to chalta hai bhai' (that much is ok)... He is like my elder brother (sic)," Kapil wrote. He also took to Twitter to apologise to Sunil, saying, "Sorry if I hurt you unintentionally. You know very well how much I love you. I am also upset. Love and regards."
Paji @WhoSunilGrover sry if I hurt u unintentionally.u knw vry well how much I luv u. M also upset .love n regards always:)— KAPIL (@KapilSharmaK9) March 20, 2017
Whose loss is it?
The differences between the two show icons started appearing well before the latest spat. Be it the lure of a better pay and a separate identity or the ‘behaviour’ of the show captain, the irreplaceable Sunil Grover left the show to start his own venture.
He realised his mistake pretty soon. With all his humility he went straight back to his old comrades.
On the other hand, it was a rosy picture all around for Kapil who kept on achieving new heights of popularity.
A film in hand, another one in the pipeline, it was a steady success trajectory for the Amritsar man. Not to mention the advertisements and talk shows with ‘Bollywood honchos’.
So, without being judgemental, it is fair to say that the audience will be the biggest loser if Sunil decides to part company with Kapil as both the actors have immortalised their characters on TKSS and look almost inseparable due to their acts and humour.
