New Delhi:

Amid the concerns of breach of privacy through Aadhaar numbers, a Punjab government website on Tuesday revealed the numbers of more than 20,000 people. These people, whose names were exposed, had applied for low-cost housing in Ludhiana and Jagraon.

As per reports in a leading newspaper, the names of more than 20,000 people and also their father’s names were published on Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) website.

Their details were published on account of a draw winning EWS (Economic Weaker Sections) houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) programme.

Aadhaar has increasingly become mandatory for many government services. Aadhaar is having 12-digit identity number which is linked to a person’s biometric details.

Many experts and activists have already raised questions on breach of privacy as these confidential information can be accessed by cyber criminals.

The Supreme Court is also hearing the matter whether the Aadhaar programme violates rights to privacy.
