New Delhi:
Fifty-seven per cent of students studying in various rural schools struggled to solve simple sum of division and 14 per cent of students when shown a map of India could identify it, according to Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) for rural India in 2017.
The ASER report was released on Tuesday. The survey was carried out in 24 states of the country. The annual report states that the the learning outcomes of boys and girls are similar.
The report further states that one-fourth of the country’s rural children aging between 14 and 15 years failed to read their own language fluently.
According to the ASER report, 14 per cent of students when shown a map of India could not identify it, while 36 per cent children could not name the country’s capital and 21 per cent did not know the name of the state they are living in.
The report states that 53 per cent can read English sentences in age group 14 years, while 79 per cent were able to explain the meaning of the sentence.
Chief economic advisor Arvind Subramanian said, “40 per cent of students do not have a role model.”
The survey also found that at least 40 per cent of student could not add weights correctly in kilograms and many failed to tell hours and minute.
