Amavasya is new moon day in Hindu calendar. In Sanskrit it means dark moon lunar phase. It is marked as a significant day as many rituals are performed only on Amavasya Tithi. Amavasya falling on weekday Monday is known as Somvati Amavasya and Amavasya falling on weekday Saturday is known as Shani Amavasya.
Also, a dark or a non-moon day in the month of Bhadrapada (August-September) is known as Bhadrapada Amavasya.This day is celebrated differently over the different states of India. This year Amavasya will be observed on August 21.
It is believed that on this day, everyone should get rid of malicious feelings and past misdeeds and instead begin a new life with optimism and love for all. Hindus observe fast on this day in order to gain peace and harmony and some others visit Ganga river to pray for the calmness of their loved ones' souls who are no longer. Many people perform pooja at their place or temple to calm down the souls of their beloved ones as this day is remarkable to end the negative energies.
