New Delhi:

The Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) on Friday has won the majority in the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council in Assam, continuing on its winning spree in the state.

The party, which leads a coalition government in the state, has won 16 out of 26 seats for which election was held.

Two seats have been notched by Independents. The BJP's ally at Dispur, Asom Gana Parishad, which had contested the KAAC polls independently, has not won any seat so far.

Meanwhile, a tensed atmosphere prevailed in the counting centre at Diphu in the morning when violent protests were staged there by a section of counting agents and political activists. Police had to resort to firing in the air to control the situation. Two police constables were injured in the mayhem.

KAAC has 30 members, of which 26 are elected and four are nominated by the governor. Of the 26 seats for which the polls were conducted, 10 are in Diphu subdivision, 9 in Hamren and 7 in Bokajan. Re-polling, if any, will be held on June 20 while counting will take place on June 22.
