Kashmir: Army officer Umar Fayaz, abducted and killed by militants in Shopian, was commissioned only 5 months ago

Almost ten days after two jawans of the Indian army soldiers were mutilated by Pakistan in Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir, a bullet-ridden body of an army lieutenant has been found in Shopian district's Herman area in South Kashmir, reports said on Wednesday.

The Indian army officer, who received multiple bullet injuries on his body, has been identified as Umar Fayaz, who belonged to Kulgam. Reports said that Fayaz was abducted by terrorists on Tuesday following which he was shot dead and his body was disposed.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley has condemned the act callinng it 'dastardly and cowardice.' "Abduction & murder of Lt. Ummer Fayaz by terrorists is dastardly act of cowardice. This young officer from J&K was a role model," he said.

He was abducted and shot dead by militants in Shopian district where he had gone to attend the wedding ceremony of a relative.

Lieutenant Umer Fayaz was abducted by five to six militants from his relative’s house in south Kashmir’s Shopian last night. His bullet riddled body was found in Harmain area of Shopian this morning, a police official said.

Fayaz was in the Infantry and was posted in Akhnoor area in Jammu. He was commissioned in the Army in December last year.

“In a dastardly act, some unidentified terrorists yesterday abducted and then killed a young Army officer, Lt Umer Fayaz,” an army official said.

He said the officer, who was unarmed, had come to his native Kulgam district on leave for attending a wedding in his family.

“The Army salutes the braveheart and stands by the bereaved family in this hour of tragedy,” the official said, adding, “we are committed to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act of terror to justice”.

On May 1, the bodies of two Indian soldiers, who were martyred following a ceasefire violation by Pak in Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir, were mutilated by Pakistan. Pakistani troops had violated ceasefire along the Line of Control in Poonch sector, attacking a patrol team near the border.

A BSF soldier and a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army were martyred in the firing by Pakistan Rangers. On April 19, Pakistani troops resorted to mortar shelling and firing on Indian posts along LoC in the same area.


Pakistan violated the ceasefire on April 8 in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir as it resorted to firing at Indian posts.
On April 5, ceasefire violation was reported along the LoC in Poonch district, while on April 4, similar incidents took place in Bhimbher Gali sector of Rajouri district.

Pakistani troops had shelled mortar bombs on forward posts in Balakote sector of Rajouri district on April 3.
