Chidambaram: Regret in life that I was never Finance Minister in absolute majority govt

New Delhi:

Former finance minister and senior Congress leader on Tuesday said that he has only regret in his life that he had never served as finance minister in a government with absolute majority.

While talking to reporters in Ahmedabad, Chidambaram said, “The only regret in my life will be that I was never Finance Minister in a Government with an absolute majority.”

He said that development cannot be measured by introducing bullet train. But a better healthcare, cleaner air, toilets are the parameters of development, he said.

“'Vikas' cannot be measured by simply saying that I am going to get a bullet train for Rs 1 lakh crore. Development does not mean headline grabbing stories, it means better healthcare, cleaner air, toilets, transportation, gender justice,” the former finance minister said.

A few days back, the former minister had hit out at Modi government for enforcing the GST without proper planning. In a tweet he had said, “Thanks to Gujarat elections, Govt forced to heed advice of Opposition and experts on flaws in implementation of GST.”
