New Delhi:

A day after it tweaked its political resolution, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM on Sunday re-elected Sitaram Yechury as its General Secretary.

Yechuri was given the second term by the newly-elected 95-member central committee at the 22nd Party Congress in Hyderabad.

Yechuri had taken over the post from Prakash Karat in 21st Party Congress held in Visakhapatnam, in 2015.

In 2017, the 65-year-old leader had proposed an electoral coalition with the Congress to oust the BJP from the power. His proposal was shot down by his party.

However, on Saturday, the party tweaked it political resolution and kept a door open for joining forces with the Congress to fight the BJP.

“We are proud of the CPI(M). It is the only party in India today which can undertake such a democratic exercise to decide its future direction. We are all agreed that our main fight is against the BJP/RSS and to defeat this Government," Yechury said during the Party Congress meeting.

"As far as the word understanding is concerned we have defined the scope of that understanding with the Congress party. Within Parliament, we have an understanding with Secular opposition parties including the Congress on agreed issues," Karat said.
