New Delhi:

The Delhi High Court on Monday dismissed Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi's requests challenging the reopening of their tax assessment for the year 2011-12.

In August, Sonia Gandhi had told the Delhi High Court that the tax department has “wrongly invoked and applied” the formula for calculating her tax liability after reopening her assessment for the year 2011-12. The contention on behalf of the Congress leader was made before a bench of justices S Ravindra Bhat and AK Chawla by senior advocate P Chidambaram.
On Monday, the judges also dismissed the petition of Congress leader Oscar Fernandes who too had challenged the reopening of his tax assessment for the same year.

The income tax assessment cases against the Congress leaders relates to the probe into the complaint filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy in connection with the National Herald case.

In the complaint, Swamy had accused Sonia and her son Rahul of conspiring to cheat and misappropriate funds by paying just Rs 50 lakh, through which the Young India (YI) had obtained the right to recover Rs 90.25 crore that the Associated Journals Ltd (AJL) owed to the Congress party.
