New Delhi:

Eid al-Adha is observed during the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. This year it will be observed on September 1 and September 2. On this day, Muslims begin their celebrations with morning prayers and exchange of gifts and slaughter a sheep or goat as part of the rituals.

While in Trivandrum it is being celebrated today.

This festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) to follow Allah's (God's) command to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael).

The festival falls on different days around the world and is only confirmed by the sighting of the new crescent moon.
