Monsoon havoc in Himachal Pradesh: Heavy showers, landslides claim 19 lives

New Delhi:

At least 19 people were killed and several others injured in different parts of Himachal Pradesh as heavy rains followed by widespread landslides continued to wreak havoc in Chandigarh, Manali and Chamba districts, forcing authorities to close schools across the state.

As per the reports provided by the state headquarters, eight persons were killed in Solan district while four people lost their lives in Mandi, two each in Hamirpur and Kangra districts and one each in Bilaspur and Una.

Interim relief was distributed by the local district administration to the affected families, the sources added.

Meanwhile, a flood alert has been sounded in Jammu and Kashmir as water levels in various rivers continue to overflow, owing to heavy downpour for the past few days. "Rivers overflow in Rajouri district after heavy rainfall lashed the area recently," the news agency ANI reported on Tuesday.

Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was also suspended for the second consecutive day due to landslides triggered by triggered by incessant downpours in Ramban district of the state.

Talking about the present flood situation in Kerala, several people fled their homes due to landslides and landslips across the southern state. People living in the downstream have been shifted to relief camps. Over 13,800 people have been provided shelter at 124 relief camps in the northern hill district of Wayanad.
