New Delhi:

Farooq Abdullah, Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, on Saturday claimed that the partition between India and Pakistan was a step taken up by top Indian politicians, and that Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, ‘did not’ want a separate nation for the Muslims.

He alleged that the entire partition had nothing to do with Jinnah’s decision, and that it took place because of India’s top political leaders of that time, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Azad, and Sardar Patel, who refused to accept a minority status for Muslims and Sikhs in the country.

Abdullah said, “Jinnah was not going to divide the country. The commission was delivered and the decision was taken that India would be divided. It said we will keep a special representation for Muslims. We will keep special dispensation for minorities and Sikh, but will not let the nation divide.”

He continued to allege that the Indian politicians did not want a minority commission for the Muslims and the Sikhs, which in turn led to the demand of Pakistan by Jinnah.

He said, “Jinnah agreed but Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Azad and Sardar Patel did not agree. When this did not happen, it was then that Jinnah demanded for Pakistan. Or else there would have been no separation. There would have been no Bangladesh, no Pakistan; there would have been one India.”

On Abdullah's remarks, MoS PMO, Jitendra Singh, said that he needs to re-read history and get his facts right.

He praised Rahul Gandhi too, and asked people to give him a chance. “I don't think he has failed. Give him time, he has just become President. It will take time for him to grow. It's not his defeat. Elections come and elections go. Any party has chance of revival if it works for people,” he said.

Recently in 2017, Abdullah had stirred a controversy by saying that the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) belongs to Pakistan and India has no right on it, and if India wants peace, it has to initiate talks with Pakistan first.

He said, “The (PoK) part which is with Pakistan belongs to the neighbouring country and this side to India. If the Indian government wants peace it will have to talk to Pakistan and conclude that an autonomy be given to us as well as them.”
