Five wrestlers among six were killed after their SUV hit a tractor, carrying sugarcane, at Maharashtra's Sangli district on Saturday, police said.

Five others, including wrestlers, were also injured in the mishap, police added.

The accident occurred at around 1 am when the wrestlers were returning after participating in a competition in Satara. All of them were parts of Kranti Kushti Sankul institution, Maharashtra.

"The mishap occurred on the Kadegaon-Sangli road, when the wrestlers were returning from Aundh village after participating in the wrestling competition there. They were heading to Kundal in Sangli,” a senior police official told PTI.

A speeding tractor, which was coming from the opposite direction, rammed into their SUV, killing six persons including five wrestlers, he stated.

Vijay Patil (Ramapur), Shubham Gharge (Soholi, Sangli), Saurabh Mane (Malkhed, Karad), Akash Desai (Kale, Satara) and Avinash Gaikwad (Shirala, Sangli) and the SUV driver Ranjeet Dhanawade lost their lives in the accident.

According to local wrestler Uttamrao Patil, their coach Vijay Mohite was also in the car, but got off at his village a few minutes before the accident.

The injured are admitted at a state-run hospital in Miraj, a officer said.

A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act has been registered at the Chinchni-Vangi police station, he said.

Moreover, investigation is also underway to nab the tractor driver who fled from the accident spot.

"It is very sad and shocking, for us," IANS quoted Sharad Lad, the secretary of Kranti Kushti Sankul institution.
