Former Chief Justice of India PN Bhagwati passed away at the age of 96 on Thursday evening. Justice Bhagwati has been ailing for some time.

It was Justice Bhagwati who introduced the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to Indian judicial system.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of former Chief Justice of India, saying he made the judicial system more accessible.

"The demise of Justice PN Bhagwati is saddening. He was a stalwart of India's legal fraternity. Bhagwati's remarkable contributions made our judicial system more accessible & gave voice to millions," he said in series of tweets.

Justice Bhagwati is also known for his controversial judgment as part of the bench in the 'Habeas Corpus case', during the Emergency under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
