The Maratha community will launch a ‘Jail Bharo Andolan’ on Wednesday in Maharashtra over demands for reservations in education and job sectors. The Maratha Kranti Morcha, which has been spearheading the protests, issued a statement calling for the agitation.

However, the organisation has hinted that there would be no violence or bandh as a team of 14 Maratha Kranti Morcha members is set to protest at Azad Maidan in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, the protesters are also calling for an apology from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for hurting community’s sentiments.

“The state government, despite its assurance of withdrawing criminal charges of vandalism and damaging public property against some protesters, has not taken any action and that is why we are holding the protest Mumbai on Wednesday,” Sakal Maratha Morcha leader Praveen Patil said.

CM Fadnavis has urged the protesters to maintain peace and tight security arrangements have also been made in several areas across the state.

Earlier on Tuesday, protesters staged a ‘rasta roko’ protest on the Aurangabad-Jalgaon road.  While on Monday, around 100 buses were burned or stone pelted as sudden violence got triggered during Maratha protests seeking reservation.

Till now, six people have committed suicide due to the ongoing agitation and the police have also informed that the eight demonstrators have also tried to set themselves ablaze in Lahur district.

Maratha outfits have announced that a mega rally will be held in Mumbai on August 9 in support of their quota demand.
