New Delhi:

A 49-year-old Mumbai businessman became the first in the city to get a Rs 90 lakh heart implant restoring normal functioning of his heart.

Doshi has been bed-ridden for past six months because of heart failure and lung tuberclosis added to his suffering, making his heart transplant more risky.

Dr Anvay Mulay, a heart surgeon, who operated on Doshi stated that heart transplants are at least three times cheaper and considered the best treatment for heart failure but number of complications in Doshi's case made him an exception.

Dr Mulay then decided to perform a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implant surgery on him on March 25. The device is a mechanical pump that is implanted inside a person's chest to help a weakened heart pump blood.

“The surgery, originally considered as a means to make the transplant easy, has now become a permanent solution to end-stage heart failure management. It will work for patients for whom a match is not found in time”, said Dr Mulay.

"Doshi's successful operation proves that we in India have one more way to treat heart failure", said surgeon Dr Mulay. He said an LVAD isn't an artificial heart. "It is a device that helps existing heart work better."

"LVADs aren't popular because of the cost, but they help patients", said heart surgeon Dr Nandkishor Kapadia from Kokilaben Ambani Hospital in Andheri. "I performed India's first LVAD implantation at a Chennai hospital in 2012. The patient is now 70 years and happy," added Dr Kapadia. More than 50,000 LVADs have been used across the world.
